Simple, practical aftercare tips to help your skin recover well and get the best results after peels, microneedling, fillers and laser.
Good aftercare is one of the simplest ways to protect your skin and get the most from any aesthetic treatment. Your practitioner will always give you advice specific to your treatment, but these general principles apply to most procedures.
1. Keep it clean and simple
For the first 24 to 48 hours, use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water and avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids and retinol. Your skin barrier needs time to recover, so less is more.
2. Protect your skin from the sun
Treated skin is more sensitive to UV light. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, even when it is cloudy, and avoid sunbathing and sunbeds. This is especially important after chemical peels, microneedling and laser treatments.
3. Hydrate inside and out
A simple, fragrance-free moisturiser helps your skin repair. After a chemical peel we finish with a rehydrating mask, such as the Casmara Novanew Mask, to help rebalance and soothe the skin. Drinking plenty of water helps too.
4. Avoid heat and heavy exercise
Saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and strenuous exercise increase blood flow and can worsen redness or swelling. Most treatments call for avoiding them for 24 to 48 hours, and some, such as PDO threads, for up to two weeks.
5. Hands off
Avoid touching, rubbing or massaging the treated area, and do not pick at any flaking skin after a peel. After fillers or threads, avoid pressure on the area and sleeping face-down for the first few nights.
6. Know what is normal
Mild redness, swelling or tenderness is common and usually settles within a few days. If you notice severe or worsening pain, spreading redness, unusual swelling or changes in skin colour, contact us straight away.
