Microneedling device used at Smart Aesthetic

Microneedling

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that encourages collagen production using tiny, sterilized needles

About Microneedling

Microneedling uses a fine-needled medical pen to create thousands of tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin or scalp. This triggers the body’s natural healing response, stimulating collagen, elastin and new cell growth, and allows active treatments to be delivered deeper than they could be through the skin’s surface alone.

At Smart Aesthetic on Harrow Road we offer three microneedling treatments, each combined with a different regenerative ingredient: PRP Facial for skin rejuvenation, PRP Hair for thinning hair, and PDRN for skin repair and hydration. At your consultation we will recommend the option best suited to your skin, hair and goals.

Our Microneedling Treatments

Three regenerative treatments, one advanced technique

PRP Facial

Sometimes called the “vampire facial”. A small sample of your own blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is rich in growth factors. The PRP is applied during microneedling so it is drawn deep into the skin to boost collagen and renewal.

Ideal for
  • Fine lines and early signs of ageing
  • Acne scarring and uneven texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Dull, tired-looking skin

PRP Hair

Your platelet-rich plasma is applied to the scalp with microneedling, delivering growth factors directly to the hair follicles. This helps stimulate weakened follicles and support thicker, healthier-looking hair over a course of treatments.

Ideal for
  • Thinning hair and early hair loss
  • A widening parting or receding hairline
  • Men and women
  • Supporting hair transplant results

PDRN

PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is made from purified DNA fragments, derived from salmon. Applied during microneedling, it supports the skin’s natural repair processes, hydration and elasticity. No blood sample is needed.

As hydration and elasticity improve over a course of treatments, the skin looks visibly plumper, smoother and more radiant. It is a popular natural choice for clients who want a fresher, fuller-looking complexion without dermal fillers.

Ideal for
  • Dehydrated or dull skin
  • Fine lines and loss of elasticity
  • Sensitised or stressed skin
  • Post-acne marks and skin recovery
  • A plumper look without dermal filler

How it Works

We start with a consultation to understand your skin or hair concerns, review your medical history and any medicines you take, and recommend whether PRP Facial, PRP Hair or PDRN is the right option for you.

For PRP treatments, a small blood sample is taken from your arm and spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma. For PDRN, no blood sample is needed. The area is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied for comfort.

A medical microneedling pen is passed over the skin or scalp, creating tiny controlled micro-channels while your PRP or PDRN is applied, so it is absorbed deep into the treated area. A facial treatment usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes including numbing.

Redness similar to mild sunburn is normal for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid make-up for 24 hours, and avoid sun exposure, saunas, swimming and strenuous exercise for 48 hours. Use a high-SPF sunscreen daily. After scalp treatment, wait 24 hours before washing your hair.

Woman with natural, healthy-looking skin

Candidates for Microneedling

  • Are at least 18 years of age
  • Want to improve skin texture, fine lines or scarring
  • Are concerned about thinning hair or early hair loss
  • Prefer natural, non-surgical treatments
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have no active skin infection in the area

Microneedling may not be suitable if you take blood-thinning medication, have a blood or platelet disorder, are prone to keloid scarring, have used isotretinoin (Roaccutane) in the last 6 months, or have a fish allergy (for PDRN). We will go through your medical history carefully at your consultation.

Quick answers to questions you may have

PRP is made from your own blood: a small sample is spun to concentrate the platelets and their growth factors. PDRN is a purified DNA-based ingredient derived from salmon, so no blood sample is needed. Both are combined with microneedling to support the skin’s natural repair; we will advise which suits you best at your consultation.

A numbing cream is applied before treatment, so most clients feel only mild pressure or a light scratching sensation. The scalp can be slightly more sensitive than the face, but treatment is generally very well tolerated.

For skin, most clients benefit from a course of around 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. For hair, a course of 3 to 4 monthly sessions is usual, followed by maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months. We will tailor a plan to you.

Expect redness for 24 to 48 hours, and sometimes mild dryness or flaking for a few days. Skin often looks fresher within a week, with collagen continuing to build over the following 2 to 3 months. Hair results develop gradually over several months.
