Non-surgical aesthetic treatments are now widely available, but they are still medical procedures and the practitioner you choose matters. These are the questions we would encourage anyone to ask before booking a treatment, wherever they go.
1. Is your practitioner a regulated healthcare professional?
Look for a practitioner registered with a professional regulator, such as the General Pharmaceutical Council, the Nursing and Midwifery Council or the General Medical Council. Registration means they are accountable for their practice and must keep their skills up to date. You can check a practitioner’s registration on the regulator’s website.
2. Will you have a face-to-face consultation?
A proper consultation should always come before treatment. Your practitioner should ask about your medical history and any medicines you take, explain the risks and alternatives, and be honest if a treatment is not right for you. Some treatments involve prescription-only medicines, which by law require an in-person assessment by a qualified prescriber.
3. Are the products genuine?
Ask which products and devices will be used and where they come from. Reputable clinics use licensed, traceable products from approved suppliers, and are happy to tell you exactly what they are.
4. Can they manage complications?
Every treatment carries some risk. A safe practitioner will explain what to look out for, give you clear aftercare advice and a way to contact them, and be trained and equipped to manage complications if they arise.
5. Is the setting clean and professional?
Treatment should take place in a clean, clinical environment, not at a party or in a non-clinical setting.
6. Be wary of very low prices
Unusually cheap treatments can mean cut corners on training, products or aftercare. Your face is worth getting right.
