Dermatologists use botulinum toxin therapy to diminish signs of aging and to treat a medical condition called hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
Botulinum therapy, often known as anti-wrinkle injections, is a prescription-only treatment used to soften dynamic lines – the lines that form through repeated facial expressions, such as frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet around the eyes.
Very small, precise amounts of a purified protein are injected into specific facial muscles. This temporarily relaxes those muscles so the skin above them looks smoother and more rested, while still allowing natural movement and expression.
At Smart Aesthetic, every treatment starts with a face-to-face consultation with a qualified prescriber. We review your medical history, talk through your goals and explain the benefits, risks and alternatives, and treatment only goes ahead if it is safe and suitable for you.
Your appointment begins with a face-to-face consultation. Your prescriber will go through your medical history, current medicines, allergies and any previous aesthetic treatments, assess how your facial muscles move, and agree a personalised plan with you before you give written consent.
The skin is cleansed and a small number of injections are placed into the targeted muscles using a very fine needle. The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes, most people describe it as a mild pinch, and you can return to most everyday activities straight away.
Results develop gradually. You will usually notice a difference within 3–5 days, with the full effect at around two weeks. Results typically last 3–4 months, although this varies from person to person depending on factors such as muscle strength, metabolism and lifestyle.
For the rest of the day, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area, lying flat for four hours, strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and steam rooms. We invite you back for a review at around two weeks to check your results and answer any questions.
Tailored botulinum therapy for the face, neck and beyond
Small amounts placed around the brows relax the muscles that pull them down, giving a subtle lift and a more open, refreshed look to the eyes.
Softens the diagonal lines that appear on the sides of the nose when you smile, laugh or scrunch your nose.
Smooths the fine lines that fan out from the outer corners of the eyes when you smile, for a fresher, brighter look.
Relaxes the muscle that pulls the corners of the mouth downwards, for a softer and less tired or sad expression.
Softens the vertical “11” lines between the eyebrows that form when you frown or concentrate.
Gently relaxes the upper lip muscle so that less of the gums show when you smile, for a more balanced smile.
Smooths horizontal forehead lines while keeping natural movement, so you still look like yourself.
Treats excessive sweating, most commonly of the underarms, by blocking the signals to the sweat glands. Results typically last several months.
Relaxes overactive jaw muscles to soften a square jawline for a slimmer face shape, and can ease teeth clenching and grinding.
Treats the muscle bands of the neck and lower jaw for a smoother neck and a more defined jawline.
Smooths the dimpled, “orange peel” texture of the chin caused by an overactive chin muscle.
Softens the fine vertical lines around the lips, which can affect anyone, not only smokers.
Relaxes the small muscle that pulls the nose tip down when you smile, giving a subtle lift.

After your consultation and consent, the skin is cleansed and a few small injections are made into the chosen muscles with a very fine needle. It usually takes 10–20 minutes and you can get back to most normal activities straight away.
No – when treatment is planned carefully, the aim is to soften lines rather than “freeze” the face. Your dose is tailored to your muscles and goals so you can still smile, frown and express yourself naturally. We take a conservative approach and review you at two weeks.
No. The treatment works on the nerves that control muscle movement, not the nerves responsible for sensation, so your sense of touch is unaffected. You may notice mild tenderness, redness or small bumps at the injection sites, which usually settle within a few hours; occasional bruising can occur.
Treatments are generally spaced at least three months apart, as more frequent treatment can increase the risk of your body becoming less responsive over time. Any small adjustment is only considered at your two-week review if your prescriber feels it is appropriate.
